Instructions for flying a helicopter

Setting up your helicopter
1. Remove the back of the controller and place in new AA Batteries in the slots, then screw the back on.
2. Charge the helicopter with either the USB charger in a computer OR from the handset. Ensure red light on the USB is OFF, ensure the helicopter is OFF, if red light stays on, switch the helicopter ON and OFF firmly a few times whilst plugged in..
3. After 30minutes, unplug and store the cable.
4. Switch the helicopter on, check the helicopter LED light is flashing, place on a flat surface for 5 seconds.
5. Turn the remote control on, slide channel to position 'A', to link to the helicopter, wait 5 seconds, flick the left joystick up and down twice, wait a futher 5 seconds, flick the joystick again to test the helicopter and controller are linked. Repeat step 5 if necessary.
6. Ready for take-off! Take care when flying for the first time, practice hovering to get a feel for the controller.

Simple steps to flying
1. Complete the steps above, then, push the left joystick up steadily until the helicopter is hovering.
2. Grasp the sensitivity of the up and down movement with the left joystick, landing it safely.
3. Once the helicopter is safely hovering, turn the right joystick left and right to turn.
4. To propel the helicopter forwards, hold the right joystick forwards for 3 seconds and it will start to accelerate.  (This is the same for backwards, but moving the right joystick back for 3 seconds.)
5. If at any point your helicopter goes out of control, pull your left joystick all the way down to stop the rotors and this will minimise damage if the helicopter lands on the floor or hits a wall.

Troubleshooting to the most common questions:

1. Upper blade set
In regular flight Robocopter should accurately hover in one place, the key to this balance is the upper blade set which has a floating pivot connected to a pair of link rods to the balance bar.  This can be damaged by hitting the ceiling or colliding with objects. Symptoms include gyrating round in circles or crashing after take off. You can tell if this is damaged by inspecting the floating pivot, if it moves side to side then it needs replacing, order here. Remove the upper blade set by unscrewing the holding screw either side, pull the entire upper set off, (keep the screws for the new part), add the new set, tighten the screws finger tight and test.

2. Lower blade not spinning / gear sliped or missing
Robocopter has a twin rotor system which is balanced by both blades spinning at the same speed. If the lower blade is not spinning fast enough, it will spin in circles very fast. First check the gears are connected correctly. The rear motor connects to the lower gear to drive the top blade and the left motor connects to the upper gear to drive the bottom blade, gently move the blades one at a time to see if they are connected, you can also check by holding the blades and applying a little bit of power to hear / see if there is no slippage. If a gear has slipped, use a small flat screwdriver to align the motor gear to the right drive gear. If a gear has come off, you can order here. To replace, get access to the gear: unscrew two screws attaching the undercarriage to the metal body, bend it back, unscrew the upper blade set and remove, remove the inner drive shaft/gear, push the gear directly onto the motor - use a pair of tweazer if needed.

3. Not charging
Robocopter can be charged directly from the handset or from a computer, we recommend charging from a computer or mains source as this saves the handset batteries and charges the helicopter to full capacity. When charging, the red light should go off. If the red light doesn't go off, try switching the helicopter on and off a couple of times whilst plugged in.

4. Activating helicopter - linking the controller and helicopter
If the helicopter doesn't come on, try the following. Set the hand channel to position 'A' all the way to the left, switch on the helicopter - you should see the small light at the front start flashing. Place the helicopter on a flat surface without movement for 5 seconds, switch the handset on, give the throttle 1 or 2 small flicks, wait another 5 seconds, give the throttle another flick and the helicopter should activate.

Happy flying!
